Dental Review takes its first look at BDIA Dental Showcase 2016, during a year of great change

Once we got over the shock of discovering that BDIA Dental Showcase had been acquired by the Mark Allen Group, a situation BDIA Director Tony Reed described as a win-win result for all concerned, we could concentrate on the show.

And there was a lot to see and enjoy in the ExCeL halls from 6-8 October this year, especially the quirkier oddities provided by some of the exhibitors. Leading dental finance plan provider Denplan celebrated its 30th Anniversary by welcoming visitors to its distinctively green-lit stand with cool, apple scented drinks, but there was also a game with a message. Visitors (top) were invited to ‘Sugar Hit’ by taking a mallet to sugary drinks – played just for fun but evidently keenly enjoyed by all those who wielded the club.

The force was certainly with the Schottlander stand; some of the market leading products on show seemed to have attracted interest from a galaxy far, far away. Dental professionals from the UK also took an eager interest in the Schottlander portfolio.

Henry Schein Dental and Philips had major announcements to make during Showcase; Philips has further expanded its oral healthcare product range and HSD has consolidated its support for every aspect of dental practice and digital workflow. Dental Review will take a closer look at both these offerings later this week in dedicated articles; both companies have a lot they want to share.

And now we take a turn around the aisles and invite exhibitors to tell readers what they had to offer, in their own words:

The experts from 3M Oral Care were on hand to show visitors some of the company’s world-renowned products. With a range of materials and equipment that cater to restorative, preventative and prosthodontic indications, the 3M Oral Care catalogue has something for everyone. Delegates were also eager to learn more about the specialist orthodontic range of appliances, which is now available.
The team also showcased the all-new Ketac Universal glass ionomer restorative, which allows practitioners to provide excellent restorations in fewer working steps – and were kept busy answering questions about many of the other excellent products they had on offer.

Earlier this year, Curaprox announced its partnership with Swiss tennis star, Martina Hingis. Since then, it has proven to be an extremely successful year for both the global ambassador and leading oral healthcare specialist.
Showcase 2016 was a particularly victorious event for Curaprox, not least because of the amount of interest received from the busy crowds that flocked to the stand.

As ever, the stars of the show were the ultra-gentle and extra efficient Black Is White Hydrosonic toothbrush and ingenious Black Is White activated carbon toothpaste. With sinks available on the stand, visitors were able to discover first-hand the “unique” qualities of the products and the benefits they pose to patients.

Other adjuncts in demand at the show were the range of interdental brushes – including CPS prime, CPS perio, CPS soft implant, CPS regular and CPS strong and implant. A selection of manual toothbrushes was also available, with the special edition models proving to be a particular hit with professionals visiting the stand.

Today, purchasing or upgrading instruments, equipment and cleaning solutions can be difficult, not least because of all the options that are now available to dental professionals, but Nuview was on hand to help delegates make sense of it all.
With live on-stand demonstrations, attendees were able to get a glimpse of what its products, such as the OPMI Pico five-step magnification dental microscope and EyeMag Pro loupes, can really do.

The experienced team were available to offer expert technical advice on products such as the alcohol-free Continu disinfectant range and the Yirro-plus self-clearing dental mirror system, which offers adjustable airflow for a permanent clear view. Visitors benefitted from Nuview’s excellent knowledge and professionalism, as well as its reputation for its unparalleled customer service.

After making headlines in the national press recently, it seems the public and professionals alike are questioning the effectiveness of string floss. Waterpik International, Inc. demonstrated clinically proven alternatives for DCP to recommend to their patients.

The Waterpik Water Flosser has been shown to be up to 50% more effective at reducing gingivitis, up to 93% more effective for reducing bleeding and can remove up to 29% more plaque than string floss. It has also been clinically proven to deliver better results than string floss when used by patients with orthodontic appliances and dental implants.

During Showcase, visitors discovered more about the latest solution in the leading Waterpik product portfolio – the Waterpik Cordless Freedom Water Flosser and some walked away with a free AT50 battery operated toothbrush, while others made the most of the huge savings available on the trial Waterpik Cordless Freedom Water Flosser.

In addition to the product range available from Wisdom Toothbrushes, was the new Wisdom, Super Slim Interspace brush. With an extra-soft, longer, thinner tuft, this solution is perfect for cleaning deeper into periodontal pockets and is also ideal for cleaning around crowns, bridgework and orthodontic appliances.

Wisdom Clean Between Interdental Brushes also proved extremely popular once again. Clinically proven to help reduce gingival disease, the brushes feature a tapered and flexible design with unique micro-fine rubber filaments that ensure a gentle yet thorough clean. Available in different sizes to suit any interdental space, the wire-free brushes massage and stimulate the gums, while also being comfortable to use.

Wisdom Toothbrushes also showcased the Dentist Dispenser Pack, containing sample sachets of Wisdom Clean Between Interdental Brushes for trial on patients in the practice.

Wrights had another successful year at Showcase. Dental technician visitors to its stand seemed particularly interested in products from its Essential Range, such as SteraGel hand disinfectant, nitrile and powder-free gloves, articulating paper, dissolving agents and many more. Its collection of prosthetics, ceramics and composites by big brands like GC and Ivoclar Vivadent were also well received by visitors, with Wrights’ professional, friendly and experienced representatives on hand to answer all questions and queries.

Wrights also proved exactly why it is one of the UK’s leading full service dental suppliers to dental practices. Not only were visitors impressed with the professional and friendly approach of the dedicated representatives, but also with their knowledge and commitment to providing an outstanding level of customer service.

Visitors received free next day delivery on all orders – just one of the perks of ordering from the nationwide distributor with a local touch. A catalogue of top solutions was on offer throughout the three days. Professionals looking to enhance their practice while making life easier investigated Carestream Dental’s award-winning solutions. The CS R4+ practice management software proved popular as always, offering the benefits of real-time data collection for highly accurate practice analysis.

Information was available on Springboard V2 – due to be released in January 2017 – which has already received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the profession with 86% of dentists surveyed stating that the new features will make their job easier. The new DEPPA integration was also praised by the profession – 100% of dentists asked believed this would save them significant clinical time.

Carestream Dental’s CS 3600 is the latest model based on the hugely successful CS 3500 intraoral scanner, which came out top for both trueness and precision when compared to three other scanners.
The CS 8100 3D was another award-winning product on display, having been shown as the leading solution for accuracy and consistency when digitalising models.
