Thumbsie wins its second National Award in a month

Thumbsie® has won its second national accolade in a month, taking the Dentist Industry Awards’, Innovation of the Year Category prize last week. The awards are the flagship celebration of the UK Dental Industry.

The award-winning fabric thumb and finger guards are designed for children who want to stop digit sucking, but need some extra help to change their behaviour. A Thumbsie fabric guard can gently and effectively help curb the habit, which, if left unchecked, can lead to a number of dental anomalies including orthodontic and breathing problems, as well as providing a source of persistent infections.

Thumbsie thumb and finger guards are available in five sizes and should be worn day and night until the habit is broken. As well as the digit guards, a reward chart, a story book, and specialist support via Thumb Sucking Clinics and the company website are available to aid the parent.

In his introduction, the Chairman of the judging committee, Dr David Huston said that the awards recognise the very best companies, concepts and individuals in British dentistry.

Competition was particularly strong in the innovation category with 13 other companies reaching the finals; primarily those which offer technology-based innovation to the dental profession including 3D scanners, teeth apps, industry-leading digital imaging and software, plus marketing & SEO and dental management software.

Thumbsie stood out

Thumbsie stood out to the judges. The company works closely with the dental sector to offer a solution to a problem which might cause damage to teeth and palate. Regarding the award Dr Ben Atkins, President elect of the Oral Health Foundation, and Dentist Industry Award judge said: “Congratulations to Thumbsie on winning this award.

“Thumb sucking can cause a wide range of issues such as breathing problems and orthodontic issues as well as having a detrimental effect on oral health. It’s lovely to see a simple yet effective product win in the Innovation category and be such a great asset to the dental industry”

This comes swiftly after Jo Bates who developed the brand, won the Best Consumer or Retail Business at the Best Business Women Awards 2019, a prestigious national award ceremony held in London last month. This competition seeks to find the very best female business talent from across the UK, often women who are also juggling the needs of their families at the same time.

Jo is thrilled by the dual recognition for the brand: “I am over the moon that Thumbsie has won these awards. The feedback that I get from people who use it is so positive – it really does offer children a gentle and effective way to stop sucking.

“It has helped hundreds of children to stop sucking for over six years now, and I hope that this recognition will mean that even more families find out how to take the stress out of stopping. I am just delighted that I made my dream to work for myself come true and that that all the hard work has paid off.”

Dental professionals who wish to recommend Thumbsie are provided with the following point of sale materials:

• Thumbs up for Ted’s Thumbsie Book free of charge for their waiting room
• A tent display card
• Leaflets offering their patients 10% discount
• A sample of thumb and finger guard

One its most recent innovations is the introduction of an affiliate programme for dental professionals, meaning practices can recommend the Thumbsie brand by directing patients to its website where sales are tracked and commission paid for every sale.

The company says it is looking forward to continuing to: “Innovate and improve its business so that it can help even more children stop sucking and prevent the damage that prolonged and vigorous sucking can cause children’s teeth,” and that: “Continuing to work with and for the dental profession” is a big part of its plans.
