European Aligner Society Third Congress: Malta 19-22nd March 2020

The European Aligner Society's programme for 2020 continues to explore innovations in aligner orthodontics. The two-and a half day Congress, which has previously attracted over 600 European and overseas delegates, will be presented by a truly international line-up of speakers.

The programme includes plenary lectures, pre-Congress courses, assistants’ programme and workshops revolving around three key topics: diagnosis and treatment planning; clinical tips; and patient perception.

Diagnosis and treatment planning in the 3D era will be presented by Dr Sean K. Carlson, USA. Working at the forefront of 3-D imaging technology Dr Carlson has developed and introduced the Visual Craniometric Analysis (VCA) to aid clinicians in designing more appropriate treatment plans and to improve their understanding of treatment success.

Dr Gomez Arango, Columbia will speak on Biomechanics in the Plastic Revolution: the key to that elusive predictability. He will focus on the use of 3D imaging and finite elements analysis in the study of biomechanic bases of different orthodontic tooth moving systems, with special emphasis on plastic aligners.

Successful Clear Aligner Therapy: is it the doctor or the aligner?” Dr Sam Daher is the creator of Orthostyle™, which combines orthodontic treatments with preventative and maintenance models.

All the way from Australia Dr Vicki Vlaskalic will talk about The Emperor’s New Clothes – Aligners and Pluralistic Ignorance. Dr Vlaskalic works in orthodontic specialty practice, is a clinical instructor at the University of Melbourne and continues to act as a clinical consultant to Align Technology, lecturing and consulting worldwide.

The digital workflow in the Orthodontic practice. The popular speaker covering this subject will be the UK’s Dr Lars Christensen, who has given more than 250 lectures and courses in orthodontics.

Other speakers include: Luis Huanca, from Switzerland, and Beatriz Solano from Mendoza, Spain.

The Clinical Tips session will include a Focus on team-work from Mr Emiliano Moretti, Italy, an ex professional soccer player with experience in Italy and Spain, also a former player with the Italian National team.

Clinical tips and more will be offered by other renowned speakers including: Vincenzo D'Anto of Italy; USA’s Paul Gange; Ivo Marek of the Czech Republic; Frank Celenza, USA; Schmuel Einy, of Israel; John Kaku, Japan; Dror Aizenbud, Israel; Sherif Kandil, Germany; Chris Laspos, Cyprus:
Rooz Khosravi, USA; and Simon Graf, Switzerland.

Also speaking will be Dr Vela-Hernandez, an Invisalign Diamond Provider with experience of more than 1,500 cases. He is a noted Clinical Speaker, European Key Opinion Leader, member of the European Orthodontic Advisory Board for Invisalign, and lecturer in the 2012, 2014 and 2016 Iberian Invisalign


Technology in the communication field will be presented by Jerko Bozikovic, an internationally acclaimed time management and productivity expert who has appeared on many radio and TV shows. He is an authority in the field of emotional intelligence, awareness and communication skills.

He is a full-time trainer in business communication skills, time and stress management, and emotional intelligence.

Simone Parrini, will ask “What patients want?”. He currently works in the Orthodontics Department of the Dental School of the University of Turin as a tutor.

Factors affecting patient compliance will be covered by Letizia Perillo of Italy. Presently, she is Associate Professor in Orthodontics and Head of the Post Graduate Orthodontic Program at the Second University of Naples.

Barry J Glaser will invite attendees to Super charge the patient experience with dental monitoring. In addition to maintaining his private orthodontic practice, Dr Glaser travels throughout the United States and Canada as a highly sought-after speaker, consultant and recognised expert in Invisalign.

Dr Glaser is an Invisalign VIP Platinum Provider, which means he has attained an exceptional level of experience treating patients with Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, and over his professional career has also treated many thousands of patients with braces.

Dr Matteo Reverdito from Italy will present Improved comfort and higher patient satisfaction through Light Accelerated Orthodontics. Extensive training with eminent mentors such as Prof. Pietro Bracco (Turin) and Prof. Rudolf Slavicek (Vienna) has allowed Dr Reverdito to evaluate problems from a multidisciplinary point of view, which is far from the traditional approach to dentistry and common orthodontics.

Start at the very beginning

Pre-Congress courses on day one will give delegates a more focused approach to learning. Companies offering courses include: Align Technology, Dentsply Sirona, Biotech Dental, and InviSolution. These will take place to highlight new technologies and methodologies applied to aligner orthodontics.

The opening ceremony will feature Dr Francesco Garino, EAS past president, passing the President medallion to Dr Alain Souchet, EAS President; Hon. Dr Chris Fearne, Minister of Health, Maltese Government; Dr Tommaso Castroflorio, EAS Scientific Chairman; and Dr Werner Schupp, editor of The Journal of Aligner Orthodontics.

The congress runs from the afternoon of Thursday 19th March and runs through to the evening of Saturday 21st at the Hilton Malta Hotel, which is situated in the heart of the fashionable Portomaso waterfront in the popular St Julian’s district in Valetta. Sunday 22nd will be a day to explore the islands of Malta and Gozo.
