Dental Review reports from the aisles of Dental Showcase 2017 at the NEC in Birmingham
The 19th to the 21st of October saw halls 3 and 3A of the NEC packed with dental professionals seeking out the latest innovations amongst a wealth of exhibitors and a top line-up of speakers. From the "Practice of the future" to the identification of incipient caries for more effective and minimally invasive preventive dental treatment, the event brought something for everyone in dental practice and the lab. We will be addressing some aspects in more detail over the next few days, but first we take a quick stroll down the aisles to take a glimpse at what was on offer.
CALCIVIS global launch
The innovative CALCIVIS imaging system was officially launched at this year’s Showcase. Practitioners could see for themselves how the innovative system for identifying pre-carious lesions could be used to demonstrate incipient caries when it can still be easily treated by a better oral health regime.
Lectures on the simple-to-use CALCIVIS system – which uses bioluminescent proteins which fluoresce in the presence of free calcium ions to demonstrate sites of early active demineralisation – were delivered by independent clinicians, who outlined how preventive practice improves as a result.
CEO Adam Christie (top) explained how the ‘demin-map’ produced by CALCIVIS’ can be used to clearly show patients where future problems could arise. He said, “CALCIVIS offers a simple procedure that helps engage patients in active preventive measures at a time when simple steps can be highly effective.
“Explaining that the glowing area on the tooth, which can be clearly seen on a wall-screen or tablet, will one day soon need filling unless something is done, helps drive the message about the need for effective oral hygiene in a clear, easy to understand way.
“One day CALCIVIS will be every dentist’s first step towards effective preventive care, and it is available in the UK now.”
A-dec available through Henry Schein
Henry Schein announced that the A-dec range of chairs has been added to its portfolio. On the A-dec stand visitors were invited to find the A-dec solution that’s right for their practice and see some of the manufacturer’s latest innovations including the A-dec 200 – a high-quality entry-level system – or the powerful A-dec 300 LED light.
We were told: “We were delighted that the session presented by Dr Kath Eastwood and dental nurse, Hayley Drury, in the ‘Dental Practice of the Future’ was such a huge success. Demonstrating the benefits of four-handed dentistry for enhanced teamwork and ergonomics, the two speakers offered plenty of hints and tips for delegates to take away and use in their own practices.”
Waterpik Water Flossers
Waterpik Water Flossers are simple to use and clinically proven to reduce gingival bleeding better than interdental brushes, studies show they are up to 50% more effective at reducing gingivitis than string floss.

Carestream Dental Pit Crew
Celebrating 10 years in the dental arena Carestream Dental, a leading provider of imaging technology and practice management software, invited visitors to engage with its “Pit Crew” to discover what technology would be most effective in their practice. “It’s not about what we can sell you,” we were told, “it’s about what will most benefit you and what you really need.”
New to the portfolio was the CS R4+ Engage, a Cloud-based online system that offers more than a highly-effective appointment booking service. It invites patients to review their in-practice experience. We also learned about Engage, the Carestream Dental online community. For Simplyhealth/Denplan practices, the integration between CS R4+ and DEPPA tools was of particular interest, with many time-saving and efficiency benefits now available.
Marketing manager Cheryl Hayes concluded: “We want to be more engaged with our customer base, and they are already very brand aware regarding our great, high value products and services. It’s a great platform to build from. The future is not just about what we can sell, it’s about how we can help our customers develop into the best practice they can be.”
