Dentist Mark Mercala will be cycling 111 miles to raise awareness about HPV and oral cancer

Mark Mercala, a dentist at Rodericks’ Victoria House Dental Practice in Loughborough, is looking to raise awareness and funds for a great cause.

“At 49 years of age, I was diagnosed with cancer of the tonsils due to the HPV virus,” he says. “I now want to raise awareness of the dangers of the disease for men at this stage of life and encourage everyone to be on the lookout for the signs.”

Currently, only girls are immunised against HPV, despite some heavy lobbying for boys to be included too. Mark has made it his mission to share his story and raise funds for the charity “Hope Against Cancer” so that others may be just as successful in their own fights against the disease.

“We have already held a Christmas-themed event at our house (organised by my wife Lesley and I) with the help of friends, which included Christmas market stalls, a raffle and an auction. Next on the fundraising agenda is a 111 mile bike ride from Loughborough to Uxbridge and any donations are very welcome to help support this fantastic charity!”

Anyone who would like to get involved and show their support are invited to visit Mark’s just giving page – and donate whatever you can. Thank-you.
