FGDP (UK)’s Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography to be updated in new year

FGDP(UK)’s Selection Criteria for Dental Radiography, the leading text on indications for radiographic investigation in dentistry, is to be updated in light of updated regulations on the use of ionising radiation.

The current third (2013) edition will be amended to take into account the recently-published Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17), and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2018 (IRMER18 - currently being finalised by the Department of Health), and the changes will be reflected in both the online and book versions of the guidance early in the new year.

IRR17 will replace IRR99 on 1 January 2018, and IRMER18 will replace both the original IRMER 2000 and the amendments from 2006 and 2011 on 6 February 2018. Both will apply in England, Scotland and Wales, and separate regulations will be produced later for Northern Ireland.

The update is being carried out by Professor Keith Horner, co-editor of the current edition, who has also updated his detailed analysis of what the revised regulations mean for dentists and dental practice teams.
