MDDUS advice to Scottish dentists returning to full range of treatments

Dental defence specialist, MDDUS, has this week welcomed the decision by the Scottish Government to allow NHS dental care to restart “the full range of treatments” on 1st November 2020.

MDDUS says there are a number of steps its members should take to review their practice and their Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) document before this date to maintain the necessary standards of infection control.

In particular, members need to be mindful of the prevailing levels of lockdown in their locality and the current risk rating for the spread of COVID-19. The SOP for NHS care should be consistent with the directions issued by the Chief Dental Officer for Scotland and the 14 health boards across NHS Scotland.

Stephen Henderson (top) head of dental division at MDDUS, said: “Before returning to the full range of treatments, I urge our members to make sure that they have reviewed the level of indemnity in place following the long period of lockdown and reduced service.

“It’s important to take care to make any adjustments required, reflecting an increase in the number of sessions a week you will work from 1st November.”

These adjustments should be made via the MDDUS website https://www.mddus.com/account/login.

Mr Henderson added: “MDDUS members can be assured that the indemnity that we offer is not conditional upon following one set of guidance in preference to another

“We expect members to make their own professional judgments in developing their SOP mindful of all the advice, guidance and information available.”
