Is Medit Dental’s Identica hybrid its most powerful 3D scanner to date? Dental Review looks at its specifications

During our visit to the Evodental Implant Centre in Heathrow we were taken on a tour of the entire facility, including its comprehensive in-house laboratory. Evodental’s Manoj Vijay and process worker Diana Popa explained how the team could provide a ‘while you wait’ implant service using the principles behind digital workflow.

In the corner of the ultra-clean lab was its table-top mounted, Identica hybrid 3D scanner from Medit Dental. An award winning Korean product the scanner allows technicians to perform auto double impression scans, provides performance speeds of 16 seconds for full arch scans (part of Evodental’s core business) and clinically proven repeatable accuracy of 5-7 microns, vital for implant bars and bridges.

It works

The Identica hybrid’s innovations start with its 3-axis arm which automatically scans both sides of an impression in one step. It can capture impressions, deep inlays and full undercuts. What this means is that the model making stage in creating a restoration can be bypassed. The scan from the impression can be directly worked on in the virtual lab and the operator can begin their design work straight away.

Laurence continued, “Model only scanners are becoming out-of-date. Having the option of skipping the whole model making process saves so much time and money and there’s no need for stone casts or removable dies.

“Impression scanning has yet to enter mainstream technology, but Medit makes it work beautifully thanks to its optimised scanning path.” He explained that providing a perfect fit for implant bars and bridges, required by dental practices like Evodental, can be challenging and requires scanning accuracy at every stage.

“Identica hybrid’s accuracy is documented according to ISO 12836, the industry international standard for precision, which promises optimal results to within seven microns. In addition we developed our own scanbody align feature which improves the precision of the scanbody location.

“What this means is that the operator can register the CAD file with the scanbody library to get information about the correct implant using the scan data. Correct position information about the implant is then sent to the CAD software for even more accurate implant placement. It’s extremely accurate, fast and simple. It works.”

Using triple camera scanning technology means the Identica hybrid enhances scan data quality for even great accuracy and less “noise”. Laurence explains, “Triple camera scanning with colour capture is a tremendous development. It enables operators to get highly detailed scan data while also allowing them to include margins and hand-drawn marking in the design process.

“What’s more, even though we now use higher resolution cameras, the resultant data isn’t too heavy thanks to our high performance decimation algorithm so it can easily and quickly be handled in any CAD software.”

Flexibility means fewer scanning steps

Thanks to the precision of its scanning operation and its flexible multi-die, the Identica hybrid speeds up workflow by allowing an operator to scan a full arch, or partials with single dies simultaneously, or up to twenty single dies separately. Plus the number of scanning steps are shortened saving even more time.

And thanks to the large size of its scanning chamber the technician can work with most types of articulator, including Artex, SAM and KaVo, plus scan larger models. A more precise model can even be fashioned using a virtual articulator saving hours of work. The scanner has a special plate helping bring the scan directly into the virtual articulator so the technician can get straight on with their design work.

The scanning sequence can be modified to whichever process is preferred by the lab. Work can be stopped and resumed at any time and any data that may have been accidentally lost can be recovered using a powerful Undo/Redo function, saving time needed for a fresh scan. Even the latest Identica software has been colour-coded to provide an intuitive, user-friendly interface.

Laurence concludes, “Simplicity, flexibility and speed have been built into the Identica hybrid along with optimal precision that works at so many levels. It has been designed to work as an important part of the digital workflow process. Technicians who invested in it wonder how they ever managed without it, but quickly take it for granted because it is that simple to use.
